This exit ramp off the information super highway has brought you to Ed
Tripet's personal website. The website is dedicated to perhaps my favorite pastime,
working on and driving Porsche 930s.
News Flash (10/2/2006)
Over a year since I published anything about my Group B 930 project. Just got back
for Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) for some testing on the mule, and I'm very
excited about the results. Since the last News Flash, I've traded in my rookie race
license for a PCA race license. I raced twice at Putnam Park and twice at BIR, where
I won the handicapped race (reverse order start). I toasted the old motor and had to
rebuild it. I also put in RSR struts and shocks and cleaned up the alignment issues.
I've added a few more safety parts (HANS) and put in a 934 styles exhaust.
The engine now runs cool and the car makes great power. Just need to make some fine
adjustments and get ready for next year's season.

I finally did it! I now can say that I've raced. The test mule and I went to Putnam Park to do our first race and we returned in
one piece a little wore out and tired. The best part is that I finished 3rd out of
4 in my class to get my first trophy. I even lead the Top Gun Race for 17 laps (of
course they gave me a 22 second lead since I was the slowest in qualification - it was a
handicapped race - and I was the slowest). I'm hooked and intend to continue to
develop my car and myself to get better at this sport.
News Flash (5/14/2005)
The motherboard fried on the machine I use to publish my website. Now I'm back on
line. I finally got the engine running about 3 weeks ago, but had no time to get an
alignment. I took the white car on the track to get a few more tracks days.
I'm challenged with running PCA club racing or SVRA vintage club racing. My car will
run GT1R in PCA if I match the necessary specs for SVRA vintage racing (the car will match
82-84 FIA group B specifications). BecauseI will be extremely out classed in GT1R, I
think I will get a few tracks days into the car before I look at racing.
News Flash (3/22/2005)
Seems like just yesterday that I updated this website. Since I got back from the 911
Overhaul Class, I've been in overdrive mode to get the mule race ready. I dropped
the engine and tore the engine down enough to tell me that I predicted the problem, a
broken head stud. Some of the studs had already been replaced and I broke one
removing it from the crankcase. I got the first 20 studs out in a little over an
hour. It took me 3 weeks to get the last 4 studs out. Now the engine short
block is back together.
I got the monoballs installed in the rear trailing arm with the new
poly bushings. I used a B90 bearing press
tool (Sir Tools) and directions that I found at Pelican
Parts to replace the grinding rear bearing. I still need to torque and check
axial play on the rear.
With 5 weeks left before my first event for the year, I'll be
on the move. My next report will be around the 3rd week in April. You can see
my current progress here.
News Flash (12/11/2004)
I just got back from the 911 Overhaul Class presented by Bruce Anderson. Bruce and Jerry Woods from Jerry
Woods Enterprises taught us just about everything there was to know about these wonderful
little engines. It was a blast to learn from these two veteran Porsche winning Le Mans and
Daytona team members and I'm ready to rip into the mule's engine andfix it.
News Flash (10/15/2004)
Well, it looks like we didn't dodge that bullet after all. I ran with the SlowPokes
organization a few weeks after Shawn's "Woman Only". The mule started to
make a broken exhaust sound late in the day. No loss of power, but I think it may be
a broken head stud. I will be pulling the engine within a few weeks.
New Flash (6/14/2004)
My wife, Shawn, and I took the mule to BIR for the "Women Only" event sponsored
by the local Porsche, BMW, and Audi club. She drove the car for three days as I
played "pit boy". I pressed hard to rebuild the front calipers and got the
rotors turned. Since Shawn does not drive as aggresive as I do, it allowed me to
monitor the brakes as we broke them in with Pagid Orange brake pads. We dodged a
bullet when the mule broke the fan belt. Shawn noticed the generator light a few
turns after it broke and shut the car down before the engine got too hot. Click on
the menu at the left to see the pictures.
News Flash (6/5/2004)
After persuasive talk from my friends, I brought the mule up the BIR for the SlowPokes event. I pushed hard to get the new
torsion bars into the car so I could get Courtney's Truck Service to align and corner
balance it before the event. The event was short lived when I spun the car running
with two others on the track. I was looking into the mirrors too much. I flat
spotted the rear tires, so I was done for the day. Brakes were still a problems,
especially since I did nothing to remedy the problem from the First Fling event. I'm
currently rebuilding the front calipers to get the mule ready for my wife, Shawn, to run
it at the "Woman's Only" event next weekend.
News Flash (5/8/2004)
The Group B 930 made it's track debut at Brainerd International Raceway. With only
24 hours left, the "test mule" came off the lift and was checked out at the
track. It was a great weekend with only "warped" brakes to contend with.
I didn't bed the pads correctly and had to deal with a shaky front end late in the
weekend. I had it up to 150 on the straight with more to go. Looks like I
won't need to do any engine mods any time soon. Now I'm getting ready to go back to
BIR for more testing on May 20th. Check out the pics. More to Come...
News Flash (3/30/2004)
With 4 weeks left to get the Group B 930 on the track, I'm starting the get the fever to
get the loose ends wrapped up. I'm currently installing the roll cage with the help
of Mike Courtney from Courtney Truck Service. You can find details and pictures at
the Project List link under the Group B 930 Project link on the left side of this page.
I've also added some information about online simulation racing,
specifically Grand Prix Legends (GPL). I find that I spend many hours racing with my
friend around the world during our wonderfully long winters here in Minnesota. White
knuckle racing helps to keep the blood pumping during the cold weather. |
